celebration of the marriage of Orlando to Mary G. Wonson

photo used with permission of the Cape Ann Museum

At the time Orlando Merchant married his second wife, the Schooner Oriole was decked out with several tattered, yet festive American flags. This was in celebration of his marriage to Mary G. Wonson. According to Joseph E. Garland's book, Down to the Sea: The Fishing Schooners of Gloucester, this photo was take on January 27, 1911 as the Oriole was tied up at Jordan's Wharf. (Jordan's Wharf may have been the former Shute & Merchant Wharf.)

This photo shows Orlando (far left) and three other men enjoying time sailing,
though not necessarily a large fishing vessel.
